1. All subspecies of Modern Tigers - Tất cả các phân loài Hổ Hiện Đại - 현대 호랑이의 모든 아종:
Tiger (Panthera Tigris) is one of the 5 big cats from Panthera Genus, along with Lion, Jaguar, Leopard and Snow Leopard. Tigers are the biggest and strongest cats in the world, even bigger and stronger than African Lions. Tiger is the King Of Beast or King Of The Jungle in Asia, mostly can be found from Siberia, Russia in the North East, Persia region included Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria...etc in the West and to India and Indonesia in the South. Tiger is a cold / cool cat which mean they prefer to live and survive in regions of cold climates. And there are about 9 subspecies of Tigers, 6 of them are still remaining and other 3 subspcies went to extinct in 20th century:
+ Siberian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Altaica).
+ Huanan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Amoyensis).
+ Indochinese Tiger (Panthera Tigris Corbetti).
+ Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris or Panthera Tigris Bengalensis).
+ Persian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Virgatta).
+ Malayan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Jacksoni).
+ Sumatran Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae).
+ Javan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sondaica).
+ Bali Tiger (Panthera Tigris Balica).
- The map of all 9 Modern Tiger subspecies -
Tiger also have 2 distinct groups are Mainland (Continental) Tiger Group and Sundaland Tiger Group.
In general, the Mainland (Continental) Tiger Group has a larger body size, brighter fur color, and fewer stripes. On the other hand, the Sunda Island Tiger Group has a smaller and lighter body size, darker fur color, more stripes, and the stripes are closer together. The skull and bone structure of these two tiger groups also have some differences.
About 1.5 million years ago in Ice Age (Pleistocene epoch), after Tigers defeated and wiped out the Lions from East Asia and most of other regions in Asia Mainland, a group of these mainland tigers moved to Sundaland where is now the Indonesia islands and a part of Malaysia. At the time, the sea level was much lower than present today, created the bridge connect the Asia Mainland to the Sundaland. And around 12,000 to 6,000 years ago, after the end of the Ice Age, the ice at the two poles melted, causing a rise in sea levels. The Tigers living in the Sunda Islands were trapped on the Indonesian archipelago and evolved separately, becoming distinct from the Tiger population on the Asian mainland, they're now the Indonesian Tigers.

Among 9 Modern Tiger subspecies, there are 3 subspecies went extinct due to the poachers and the human encroachment into their wild environment in 20th century. Those 3 subspecies are Persian (Caspian) Tiger, Javan Tiger and Bali Tiger.

+ Persian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Virgata) is one of the largest tiger subspecies. They ruled in Central Asia to West Asia, included Persia, Middle East. Persian Tiger is also called Caspian Tiger, Turanian Tiger, Caucasian Tiger, they're belonged to the Mainland Tiger Group. They went to extinct in early 1970s.
+ Javan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sondaica) roamed in Java island, Indonesia. They're about same size with Sumatran Tiger and one of 3 tiger subspecies of Sundaland Tiger Group (Indonesian Tigers). They also went to extinct in 1970s.
+ Bali Tiger (Panthera Tigris Balica) roamed in Bali island, Indonesia. They're considered as the smallest of all modern tiger subspecies, most of them are only about same size with leopard or jaguar. Bali Tiger is also one of 3 tiger subspecies of Sundaland Tiger Group (Indonesian Tigers). They went to extinct in 1950s.
2. Siberian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Altaica) - Hổ Siberia - 시베리아 호랑이:
Siberian or Amur Tiger (Panthera Tigris Altaica) is the Biggest Modern Tiger subspecies and also the Largest and Tallest cat on Earth, even larger and stronger than African Lions. 1m to 1m2 average at shoulder height. They're 2m to 2m5 in length and 3 to 4m length included tail. Weighed around 150kg to 190kg for female and 230kg to over 300kg for average male tigers. And the biggest wild Siberian Tiger ever recorded was a huge male was shot in 1950 in Russia, weighed 400kg (900 lbs) and the biggest captive Siberian Tiger was Jaipur in New Jersey, United States in 1988, weighed up to 500kg (1,100 lbs) and 1m3 tall at shoulder height.

Their scientific name "Panthera Tigris Altaica" is derived from the Altai Mountains. The Altai Mountains are a mountain range that spans across several countries, including Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan. The Siberian tiger is primarily found in the region of the Russian Far East, which includes parts of Siberia. The subspecies name "Altaica" is used to indicate the geographical origin of the Siberian tiger. It refers to the Altai Mountains, which are a significant part of the tiger's habitat. The Altai Mountains provide a diverse and suitable environment for the Siberian tiger, with its mix of forests, mountains, and prey species. The use of the subspecies name "Altaica" helps to classify and differentiate the Siberian tiger from other tiger subspecies based on its specific region of origin. It's a way to scientifically categorize and identify the unique characteristics of the Siberian tiger population found in the Altai region.

The territory of the Siberian Tiger spans the Far Eastern region of Siberia, Russia, which includes the northeastern part near the Kamchatka Peninsula. As for the western boundary of the Siberian Tiger's habitat, it is identified to be in the western part of Gansu Province (Tỉnh Cam Túc / 甘肅省 / 감숙성), China. In 1954, a sub adult male tiger was recorded in Huining County (Huyện Hội Ninh / 회령현 / 會寧縣), Gansu Province, China. This indicates that tigers from the west to the east and central regions of Gansu Province all belong to the Siberian Tiger. The area around the Huanghe River (Yellow River / Sông Hoàng Hà / 黄河 / 황하) in China is the southernmost region where the Siberian Tiger inhabits.

In terms of size, the Siberian Tiger is truly a colossal beast. They can reach a length of 4 meters from nose to tail and stand at a height ranging from 2m7 (9ft) to 3m3 (11ft) when standing on their hind legs. The reason behind their massive size could be attributed to the Siberian region where they inhabit, known for its harsh and frigid climate. During winter, temperatures drop as low as -10 to -34 degrees Celsius. The Siberian Tiger is built to withstand the cold better than any other tiger species, with its thick fur. Tigers are also Cool Cats, preferring cooler climates and thriving larger in places with cool or frigid temperatures. Typically, animals tend to evolve and grow larger in regions with cold climates to adapt.

In terms of genetics, the Siberian Tiger is believed to be the closest living descendant of the giant Ice Age species called the Wanshien Tiger (scientific name is Panthera Tigris Acutidens). After the Ice Age (Pleistocene) ended about 12,700 years ago, the giant Wanshien Tiger is thought to have evolved and transformed into the Siberian Tiger and other modern tiger species to adapt to environmental changes and climate variations, while the remaining Wanshien Tigers went extinct. Present-day Siberian Tigers inherit the genes of the ancient Wanshien Tiger to some extent, and the largest recorded Siberian Tigers in the world can reach sizes equivalent to the Wanshien Tiger.
You can read my article about the Giant Wanhsien Tiger here: https://hasukokoro2.tistory.com/17
Here, I will present a few remarkable giant Siberian tigers so that you can realize how much larger they are than you might think.
- 1st. Jaipur, the 465kg Siberian Tiger, the Biggest Tiger Ever Recorded - Jaipur, Con Hổ Siberia Kỷ Lục Lớn Nhất nặng 465kg - 기록된 가장 큰 호랑이인 465kg의 자이푸르 시베리아 호랑이:
(These photos were Upscaled and Edited by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
Jaipur is the biggest tiger and also the biggest cat ever recorded in the world. He and his owner Joane lived in New Jersey, United States. In 1988 (1988년), when he was 7.5 years old, Guiness Record recognized him as the biggest tiger ever recorded as he weighed 424kg at the time.
- Jaipur, the Biggest Siberian Tiger VS Hercules, the Biggest Liger - Jaipur, con hổ Siberia lớn nhất VS Hercules, con sư hổ lớn nhất - 자이푸르, 가장 큰 시베리아 호랑이 대 헤라클레스, 가장 큰 사호 (라이거):
However, he was keep growing up and he was revealed to be 465kg. There are even some unconfirmed information said he weighed up to 500kg (1,100lbs) before he died. Jaipur is even bigger than Hercules, the Liger (hybrid of male African Lion and female Bengal Tiger) who weighed 415kg.
- 2nd. Samson, the 350kg Siberian Tiger - Samson, con Hổ Siberia nặng 350kg - 350kg 나갔던 시베리아 호랑이 샘슨:
Samson is a massive male Siberian Tiger living in Single Vision Inc, located in 8185 Forest Hills Road, Melrose, Florida, United States. According to Carl Boward, his owner, revealed that he weighed up to 350kg (over 700 pounds) and about 3m in length from nose to tail (10ft).
(These photos were Upscaled and Edited by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
In 2015, 2016, Samson is believed to be one of the largest living tigers in the world. Despite Carl Boward is 1m83 tall (6ft 1) but compare to this giant tiger standing on its hind legs, Carl looks small and insignificant in comparison to Samson the Siberian Tiger.
Unfortunately, illegal hunting and habitat destruction have led to a significant decline in the availability of large prey in the natural environment, which is the Siberian tiger's primary food source. Human conflicts have also played a role, resulting in most present wild Siberian tigers being unable to reach the large size of Samson. In previous decades, there were many Siberian tigers weighing 300kg and over in the wild. However, due to the killing of the largest Siberian tigers, only individuals with average sizes remain.
- 3rd. Sabre, the giant male Siberian Tiger weighed over 400kg - Sabre, con Hổ đực Siberia khổng lồ nặng hơn 400kg - 사베르, 400킬로그램 이상 나갔던 거대한 수컷 시베리아 호랑이:
Sabre is one of the biggest tigers ever recorded. He's one of the tigers from Sabre Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of tigers in Stagecoach, Lyon County, Nevada, United States. His sons, Thor and Thunder also have the similar size and weight.

- Sabre the Siberian Tiger with Nancie the baby girl - Hổ Siberia Sabre và em bé gái Nancie - 시베리아 호랑이인 사베르 와 아기 소녀인 낸시.
Nancie is Peter Renzo's daughter. According to Peter Renzo, the owner of Sabre, the Siberian Tiger and also the founder of Sabre Foundation, he's not promoting children interacting with big cats (tiger, lion, leopard...etc) but Nancie and this Siberian Tiger "Sabre" grew up together and loved each other very much. His daughter Nancie and Sabre the Siberian Tiger had a very special relationship. So just want to make sure with you that this is totally and absolutely not the children abuse or something like that. Not mentioned these photos were taken in 80s.
Peter Renzo revealed that he named Sabre Foundation after the name of this Siberian Tiger. And SABRE is also the short text of "Siberians Are Becoming Rapidly Extinct". Sabre was in National Geographic - once the biggest tiger in the world. His goal is to protect and preserve Siberian tigers.
Sabre Foundation is a private organization to educating children and the general public about big cats to keep them from becoming extinct. Peter Renzo and his people are raising, preserving Siberian, Bengal Tigers and a Black Leopard. Sabre died in over a decade ago due to his old age. Sabre was considered as the only Siberian Tiger can rival in size with Jaipur the Biggest Siberian Tiger ever recorded.

However, not all Siberian Tigers are the same. There are three breeds of Siberian Tigers with different physical characteristics, facial proportions, stripes, and sizes. The three breeds include the Siberian Tiger from Russian Siberian Tiger, the Northeast China Tiger, and the Korean Tiger. Although all three breeds belong to the Siberian Tiger species, they still have distinct traits. In ancient times, all Siberian Tigers were the same, but due to climate changes, ecological conditions and habitats changed, as well as geographic and various other factors, they have evolved and developed with some differences compared to Siberian Tigers in other regions of Northeast Asia.

Siberian Tiger subspecies (Panthera Tigris Altaica) has 3 distinct breeds:
+ Russian Siberian Tiger: the largest, the original and the most popular type of Siberian Tigers.
+ North East China Tiger: also known as North China Tiger (Huabei Tiger), they're very big and similar in size with Russian Siberian Tiger.
+ Korean Tiger: the smallest breed of Siberian Tigers.

There is an interesting fact and history about the Siberian Tigers in China. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, China was identified to have two main tiger species: larger tigers in the northern region and smaller-bodied tigers in the southern region. The tiger subspecies found in southern China is called the Huanan (South China) Tiger (Panthera Tigris Amoyensis), which is found in Central and Eastern China, including the Yangtze River region and parts of the Southern Huang He River (Yellow River) region, including a portion of Eastern Tibet. However, they wondered why there are Huanan (South China) Tigers but there was a curiosity about the absence of a Huabei (North China) Tiger. So, what is the North China Tiger? At that time, the Siberian Tigers in China were scientifically referred to as Panthera Tigris Coreensis, with 'Coreensis' indicating Korea. Additionally, scientists classified the tigers in Northern China and the Korean Peninsula as a subspecies with the aforementioned scientific name, considering them distinct from the Siberian Tigers (Panthera Tigris Altaica) found in Russia. However, after decades of research, particularly from the 1920s to the 1950s, researchers discovered that the tigers found in North China like Gansu, Qinghai, and the Korean Peninsula were actually Siberian Tigers and shared identical characteristics with the Siberian Tigers in Russia, including fur, skeletal structure, body size, and DNA, confirming them as the same subspecies. As mentioned earlier, in 1954, a nearly adult male tiger was discovered in Huining County, Gansu Province, China, and it was confirmed to be a Siberian Tiger. Another big male tiger was hunted by warlord Tang Yu Lin (湯玉麟 / Thang Ngọc Lân / 탕옥린), the provincial governor of Rehe province (热河省 / Tỉnh Nhiệt Hà / 열하성) in 1929 is also a Chinese Siberian Tiger (Huabei or North China Tiger).

This finding also indicated that the historical territory of the Siberian Tigers was much larger than it is now, encompassing areas such as Jilin, Hebei, and the northern regions of China as the western boundary, as well as the northern areas along the Yellow River as the southernmost boundary of the Siberian Tiger's distribution range. Currently, the majority of Siberian Tigers in China are primarily conserved in national parks in the provinces of Manchuria and Heilongjiang, located in northeast China. Similarly, Siberian Tigers in wild Russia are also found in national parks in the Siberia region, close to China and North Korea. However, in the past, their territory extended as far as near the Kamchatka Peninsula in northern Siberia.
