Wanhsien Tiger and Ngandong Tiger, the Biggest and Strongest Cats in Prehistory.
Happy International Tiger Day!!!
1. Ice Age (2.58 million years ago to 11,700 years ago) - Kỷ Băng Hà (2 triệu 580 ngàn năm đến 11 ngàn 700 năm về trước) - 빙하기 (258만년 전 부터 11,700년 전 까지).
About 2.58 million years to 11,700 years ago, it was the Pleistocene or also called the Ice Age when the temperature of planet Earth become colder, The ice at the two poles extends and covers the Earth during era. Ice Age or Pleistocene is the most recent period before Holocene (our current modern period), spanning the Earth's most recent period of repeated glaciations.

At the time, the sea level was much lower than present and it connected all continents and islands together as the bridges so humans and wild animals from different places can move to other new lands and inhabit in there.
Ice Age or Pleistocene is well known with iconic wild prehistoric animals like Mammoth Elephants, the Saber Tooth Tigers, Giant Elks, Huge Bears, Gigantic Sloths, wild horses...etc.

Songhua River Mammoth (Mammuthus Sungari) or also known as Siberian Mammoth is the biggest Mammoth Elephant subspecies, they're about 3m7 to 4m2 tall at shoulder height, weighed around 8 to 10 tons. They can be found in Siberia, Far East Asia, including the lands near Songhua River in North East China, North Korea and Russia. Songhua (in Chinese) or Songhwa River (in Korean) and Сунгари (Sungari in Russian) is one of the primary rivers of China, and the longest tributary of the Amur River. This wild animal co-existed with the giant Wanhsien Tigers, Elasmotherium (The Giant One Horned Rhino) and many other iconic prehistoric wild animals.
2. About 2.5 to 2 million years ago:
Around 2.5 to 2 million years ago, a species of cat belonging to the Panthera Genus called "Longdan Tiger" or also known as "Panthera Zdanskyi" appeared. They're the ancestor of Tigers, evolved and branched into many different Tiger subspecies. The fossils of Longdan Tiger (Long Đảm Hổ / Simplified Chinese: 龙担虎 or Traditional Chinese: 龍擔虎 / 용담 호랑이) were found in Gansu Province (Tỉnh Cam Túc / 甘肅省 / 감숙성), North West China.
(This picture was Made by Prehistoric Fauna: Roman Uchytel, Upscaled and Edited by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
Longdan Tigers or Panthera Zdanskyi were smaller than modern Tigers, they're only 1m6 in length, 75cm at shoulder height and weighed around 80kg. Longdan Tigers are about same size as a Big Leopard or a Jaguar.
2.5 to 2 million years ago was the Early stage of Pleistocene or also known as Ice Age, spanning the Earth's most recent period of repeated glaciations.
3. The Evolution of Tiger - Sự Tiến Hóa của Loài Hổ - 호랑이의 전화.
Tiger is one of the big cats belonged to Panthera Genus, along with Lion, Jaguar, Leopard and Snow Leopard. And about 2.88 million years ago, the tiger and the snow leopard lineages diverged from the other Panthera species, and that both may be more closely related to each other than to the Lion, Leopard and Jaguar. And then, since early Pleistocene, the Tiger separated from the common lineages with Snow Leopard.
Tiger originated from East Asia, in China and Siberia (Russia), traced back to the early Pleistocene epoch (Ice Age), which began around 2.58 million years ago. The fossils of Longdan Tigers (Panthera Zdanskyi) evidence suggests that they're the earliest tigers and they were smaller and more primitive than modern tigers. By the time, tigers evolved, grown bigger and stronger, diversified into different subspecies, each adapted to its own unique environment. By the end of the Pleistocene epoch, which ended around 11,700 years ago, there were several different tiger subspecies scattered throughout Asia, from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia to the frozen tundra of Siberia.
- The Map of East Asia in Ice Age - Bản đồ khu vực Đông Á thời Kỷ Băng Hà - 동아시아의 빙하기 지도:
(This map was Created by Atlas V7X on DeviantArt and Re-Shared by Lazy-Guy on Tistory. Upscaled, Edited and Added Texts by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
At the time, before there was Tiger, there was the Lion lineages, the earliest Lions lived in 3.5 million years to 2.5 million years ago, and these Lions were called Mosbach Lions or also known as their scientific name "Panthera Leo Fossilis", they scattered to entire Eurasia (Asia and Europe) and Africa and branched into many different Lion subspecies. The Lion had dominated Asia for a long time until the emergence of the Tiger, a larger and stronger species in 1.5 million years ago. The Tiger defeated, pushed back, and wiped out Lions from East Asia during the Ice Age.
About 1.5 million years ago, from China and Siberia in Russia, the tiger species dominated and expanded its territory throughout Asia, spreading to Central Asia and India. Also during this time, a group of tigers from the Asian continent moved to the Sunda Islands in the South, now part of Indonesia and Malaysia. From then on, the tiger group in the Sunda Islands began to evolve and became distinct from the tiger group on the Asian mainland. Although tigers have evolved and branched into many different subspecies, there are two main distinct tiger groups: the Mainland (Continental) Tiger Group and the Sunda Island Tiger Group:
- The Continental (Mainland) Tiger Group and the Sunda Island Tiger Group - Nhóm Hổ Đại Lục và Nhóm Hổ Đảo Sunda - 대륙 호랑이 그룹과 순다 제도 호랑이 그룹:
(This picture was Created by Peppermint Narwhal Creative, Upscaled and Edited by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
In general, the Mainland (Continental) Tiger Group has a larger body size, brighter fur color, and fewer stripes. On the other hand, the Sunda Island Tiger Group has a smaller body size, darker fur color, more stripes, and the stripes are closer together. The skull and bone structure of these two tiger groups also have some differences.
- The Mainland (Continetal) Tiger Group are including these Tiger subspecies:
+ Wanhsien Tiger (Panthera Tigris Acutidens, extincted in the End of Ice Age, largest tiger and big cat ever lived).
+ Siberian Tiger or Amur Tiger (Panthera Tigris Altaica, the largest living tiger and also the largest living cat).
+ Bengal Tiger or Indian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris or Panthera Tigris Bengalensis).
+ Huanan Tiger or South China Tiger (Panthera Tigris Amoyensis).
+ Indochinese Tiger or South East Asian Tiger, Thailand Tiger (Panthera Tigris Corbetti).
+ Persian Tiger or Caspian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Virgata, went extincted by poachers in 1970s in 20th century).
+ Malayan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Jacksoni).
+ Prehistoric Japanese Tiger.
- The Sunda Island Tiger Group are including these Tiger subspecies:
+ Ngandong Tiger (Panthera Tigris Soloensis, one of the largest tigers and big cats ever lived, extincted in the End of Ice Age).
+ Sumatran Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, the only survivor of Sunda Tiger Group or Indonesian Tigers).
+ Javan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sondaica, extincted by poachers in 1970s of 20th century).
+ Bali Tiger (Panthera Tigris Balica, extincted by poachers in 1950s of 20th century).
+ Trinil Tiger (Panthera Tigris Trinilensis, exincted in 50,000 years ago in the Ice Age).
+ Bornean Tiger (the reason they went extincted is unknown).

From approximately 12,000 to 6,000 years ago, after the end of the Ice Age, the ice at the two poles melted, causing a rise in sea levels. The Tigers living in the Sunda Islands were trapped on the Indonesian archipelago and evolved separately, becoming distinct from the Tiger population on the Asian mainland.
To make you easier to figure out the differences between these two tiger groups, let me provide you with an example by using two representative species. The Siberian Tiger represents the Mainland Tiger Group, while the Sumatran Tiger represents the Sunda Island Tiger Group:
- Siberian Tiger, the Representative of Mainland Tiger Group - Hổ Siberia, đại diện của Nhóm Hổ Đại Lục - 대륙 호랑이 그룹의 대표인 시베리아 호랑이:
(I made this GIF myself from the video "시베리아 호랑이 (Siberian Tiger)" on AI ART on Youtube on August 6 2023)
Siberian or Amur Tiger (Panthera Tigris Altaica) is the Biggest Modern Tiger subspecies and also the Largest and Tallest cat on Earth, even larger and stronger than African Lions. 1m to 1m2 average at shoulder height. They're 2m to 2m5 in length and 3 to 4m length included tail. Weighed around 150kg to 190kg for female and 230kg to over 300kg for average male tigers. And the biggest wild Siberian Tiger ever recorded was a huge male was shot in 1950 in Russia, weighed 400kg (900 lbs) and the biggest captive Siberian Tiger was Jaipur in New Jersey, United States in 1988, weighed up to 500kg (1,100 lbs) and 1m3 tall at shoulder height.
- Sumatran Tiger, the Representative of Sunda Land Tiger Group - Hổ Sumatra, đại diện của Nhóm Hổ Đảo Sunda - 순다랜드 (순다 섬) 호랑이 그룹의 대표인 수마트라 호랑이:
(I made this GIF myself from video "Sumatran Tiger - Vanishing Species" on Big Cat Rescue on Youtube on August 6 2023)
Sumatran Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae) can be found in only Sumatra Island of Indonesia, they're the smallest subspecies of modern Tigers, about half size of an average Bengal Tiger or Siberian Tiger. Male Sumatran Tigers are around 1m5 to 1m9 in length and 2m to 2m5 including tails. Female Tigers are around 1m4 to 1m6 in length from nose to butt. Male Tiger weighed about 100kg to 150kg and female tigers weighed 75kg to 100kg. However, there were few huge male Sumatran Tigers can reached up to 200kg but it's very rare. Sumatran Tigers are one of the 3 Sunda Land or Indonesian Tigers, along with Javan Tiger and Bali Tiger, and they're also the last survivor of all Sunda Island Tigers since Bali Tiger went extincted in 1950s and Javan Tiger went extincted in 1970s of 20th century due to poachers.
But the main topic in this article will be focusing on the 2 Giant Prehistoric Tiger subspecies in Ice Age are Wanhsien Tiger and Ngandong Tiger, the largest Tigers and may be also the largest and strongest cats ever lived on Earth! Not about these Modern Tiger subspecies. I will talk about the 9 Modern Tiger Subspecies in another article.
4. Wanhsien Tiger (Panthera Tigris Acutidens) - Hổ Vạn Huyện - 완시엔 호랑이:
Wanhsien Tiger or also known as Pleistocene Tiger, Giant Ice Age Tiger or Prehistoric Siberian Tiger is the largest Tiger and may be also the largest and strongest cat ever lived on Earth. Wanhsien Tiger (Panthera Tigris Acutidens) lived in East Asia Mainland, including China, Siberia of Russia and Korea around 300,000 years to 11,700 years ago in Ice Age, based on the fossil record. They're around 2m2 to 2m5 in length, 1m to 1m23 tall at shoulder height and weighed around 250kg to 400kg for average. The Biggest Wanhsien Tigers are estimated to be around 420kg to 500kg and 1m3 tall at shoulder height, about same size with Jaipur, the Biggest Modern Siberian Tiger ever recorded in 1988 in New Jersey, United States.
(I drawn this picture by AI (Artificial Intelligence), Upscaled, Edited, Color Grading and Re-Drawn the tail, eyes and the stripes on the hind leg by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
They are called "Wanhsien" Tiger because their fossils were mostly found in Wanxian (Vạn Huyện / 萬縣 / 万县 / 만현), now known as Wanzhou District (Vạn Châu Khu / simplified Chinese: 万州区; traditional Chinese: 萬州區 / 만주구) in Sichuan Province (Tỉnh Tứ Xuyên / 四川省 / 사천성) in China. And their scientific name "Panthera Tigris Acutidens" because "Acutidens" is the combination of "Acutus" (mean Sharp) and "Dens" (mean Teeth) in Latin language, so Acutidens mean "Sharp Teeth". The scientists named Wanhsien Tiger this scientific name due to their characteristics of large and sharp teeth.

(I drawn this picture by AI (Artificial Intelligence), Upscaled, Edited, Color Grading and Re-Drawn the eyes by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
There is some evidence to suggest that the Wanhsien Tiger may have contributed to the genetic makeup of some modern tiger subspecies, including the Siberian Tiger (Panthera Tigris Altaica). So the reason they went extincted may be because climate changed and the environment in the End of Ice Age or some of Wanhsien Tigers may evolved and become the Modern Siberian Tigers in present.
(I drawn this picture by AI (Artificial Intelligence), Upscaled, Edited, Color Grading and Re-Drawn the tail, eyes by Me, Dang Yeon Sim)
According to some sources, the skulls of Wanhsien Tigers are larger than the Modern Siberian Tigers. Wanhsien Tiger's skulls can reach up to 400 to 500mm in length and about 250 to 300mm width.
- The fossilized skull of a Wanhsien tiger found in China (Upper Jaw) - Hộp sọ hóa thạch của một con Hổ Wanshien (Hàm trên) - 중국에서 발견된 완시엔 호랑이의 화석 두개골 (상악):

And if you think this reconstruct picture is faked, not accurate, ridiculous and exaggeration, then i will show you a Huge Modern Siberian Tiger with a woman in real life. And this picture is real, not faked, not photoshopped:
The modern Siberian (Amur) Tigers are very big, the biggest ones can weighed up from 300 to 400kg, 1m1 to 1m25 tall at shoulder height and 2m2 to 2m5 in length. Not even mentioned about Jaipur, the Biggest Siberian Tiger ever recorded by Guinness Record weighed up to 423kg in 1988 in New Jersey, United States:
Jaipur is the biggest tiger and also the biggest cat ever recorded in the world. He and his owner Joane lived in New Jersey, United States. In 1988 (1988년), when he was 7.5 years old, Guinness Record recognized him as the biggest tiger ever recorded as he weighed 423kg at the time. However, he was keep growing up and he was revealed to be 465kg. There are even some unconfirmed information said he weighed up to 500kg (1,100lbs) before he died.
And if a modern tiger like the Siberian Tiger can achieve such a large size, then you can imagine how much larger the prehistoric Wanhsien Tiger, bigger than the modern tiger, could be.
The climate becomes colder and fresher during the Ice Age, providing favorable conditions for plants and trees to thrive, resulting in increased nutrients for herbivorous animals such as Woolly Mammoths, Wild Buffalos, Wild Horses, Elks, and more, which are natural preys for the Tiger. As a result, the Wanhsien Tiger also had to grow larger to adapt. Additionally, in general, most animal species in cold climates tend to grow larger body size and stronger compared to animals in warmer and hot regions, while the Tiger is a Cool Cat species. Tigers prefer cool environments, and most subspecies of Tigers in the frigid northern regions are larger than the subspecies found in tropical regions of the South.

5. Ngandong Tiger (Panthera Tigris Soloensis) - Hổ Ngandong - 응간동 호랑이:
Ngandong Tiger (Panthera Tigris Soloensis) is the ruler of Sunda Land in Ice Age. If Wanhsien Tiger is the giant tiger in Asia Mainland in the North, then Ngandong Tiger is the giant in the South. About their size, few fossils show that they're about as large as the big modern Bengal Tigers, but other remains are very huge, showing the Ngandong Tigers are about similar in size with the giant Wanhsien Tigers. The male Ngandong Tigers are 2m2 to 2m5 in length from nose to butt, 1m to 1m2 tall at shoulder height and weighed around 230kg to 350kg. And the largest Ngandong Tiger can reach up to the size of 400kg to 470kg. Ngandong Tiger is among the largest felines (cats) ever existed, along with Wanhsien Tiger (Panthera Tigris Acutidens) and American Lion (Panthera Atrox).

Ngandong Tiger is believed to have existed from approximately 150,000 years ago until around 11,700 years ago. About 150,000 years ago, Wanhsien Tigers and may be also some groups of Asia Mainland Tigers moved to the Sunda Land shelf. And this time, they mixed with the original form of Sunda Tigers and produced the Ngandong Tiger. However, at this time, the Wanhsien tigers were already large, so when they arrived to the Sunda, they reached incredible dimensions.

The Ngandong Tiger is named after the Ngandong region in the Solo River Valley on the Indonesian island of Java, where significant fossil discoveries of this tiger subspecies were found. Located in Central Java island, Ngandong is an archaeological site of the ancient prehistoric human species "Homo Erectus". And their scientific name "Panthera Tigris Soloensis" is derived from the word "Solo," which refers to the Solo River Valley in Java, Indonesia, where the Ngandong Tiger fossils were primarily discovered. The name is a recognition of the region where this specific subspecies was known to have existed.

In the 1930s and 1940s, a series of paleoanthropological excavations took place in the Ngandong region, Indonesia, primarily led by the Dutch paleontologist Ralph von Koenigswald. These excavations aimed to uncover human fossils, but during the process, several fossil remains of large mammals were also discovered, including those of tigers. The tiger fossils found in the Ngandong region were identified as a distinct subspecies and were subsequently named Panthera Tigris Soloensis, commonly known as the Ngandong Tiger.

Like what i mentioned above, the Sunda Land Tigers evolved differently from their counterparts in Asia Mainland during Pleistocene (Ice Age) and after the End of the Ice Age. The Ngandong Tiger shares many similarities with other Sunda tiger subspecies in Indonesia such as the Sumatran Tiger, the Javan Tiger, and the Bali Tiger.

However, the Ngandong Tiger is not believed to have evolved into the modern Indonesian Tiger, as the Ngandong Tiger and modern Indonesian Tigers are considered to be separate subspecies. The Ngandong Tiger is believed to have gone extinct around 11,000 to 15,000 years ago, while the Indonesian Tigers are believed to have evolved from a different subspecies and become Javan Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sondaica), Sumatran Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae) and Bali Tiger (Panthera Tigris Balica).

This is the one of complete skulls known for the Ngandong Tiger, there are other fossils in the Sangiran museum but most of them fragmentary). This skull is measured to be 373mm in length in true size but as you can see it is broken at the end due to bad excavation process. The Dutch archaeologist, Koenigswald estimated that the skull is probably measured some 10 or 20 millimiters more, and using modern Javan tigers as a surrogates, calculate a greatest length of 386 mm "complete" form.
In fact, most of the bones of the Ngandong Tiger specimens were not very well preserved and they were even damaged in the extraction, broken part of the skull was caused by people, not by the fossilization process. It is a real shame that the excavation process in that area was so bad.
- A skull of Ngandong Tiger in Geology Museum in Bandung, West Java province, Indonesia - Một hộp sọ của Hổ Ngandong trong Viện Bảo Tàng Geology ở thành phố Bandung, tỉnh West Java, Indonesia - 인도네시아 서자바 주 반둥의 지질 박물관에 있는 응간동 호랑이의 두개골:
Although most of the bones are not completed and were broken by people, however, the largest skull is estimated to be 477mm in length.
Compare in size, for generally, the Wanhsien Tiger from Asia Mainland is slightly bigger and heavier than Ngandong Tiger from Sunda Land (now is Indonesian islands). And it's the same for these 2 giant prehistoric tigers as most of Mainland Tigers are heavier and bigger than Sunda Land Tigers. The skulls of Ngandong Tiger are more narrow and lighter than the same size Wanhsien Tiger's skulls. This share the same charatiristics with the modern Mainland (Continental) Tiger Group and Sunda Land Tiger Group.

6. After The End of Ice Age and Modern Tigers - Sau Kỷ Băng Hà và những con Hổ Hiện Đại - 빙하기 이후 와 현대 호랑이들:
The Pleistocene Epoch (Ice Age) ended in 11,700 years ago. At the time, Ice at the Earth's poles melts make the sea level increase higher. The Sunda Land disappeared and become the modern Indonesian islands we know today. The Climate and Environment changed made some species in Ice Age went extincted.
Wanhsien Tiger is not believed entirely extincted, some of them may survived and evolved to be the modern Mainland (Continental) Tigers, especially Siberian Tiger and Huanan (South China) Tiger are the closest relative to Wanhsien Tiger. So they don't totally went extincted but transforms and adapt with the new era.
While Ngandong Tiger is totally extincted, only 3 Indonesian (Sunda) Tigers survived are Sumatran Tiger, Javan Tiger and Bali Tiger. However, in 20th century, Javan Tiger and Bali Tiger were also extincted due to poachers and the increase of human population, affect to their habitats. Now, only Sumatran Tiger remains but they're also critically endangered.
Another Asian Mainland Tiger went exincted in 20th century is Persian or also known as Capsian Tiger. There were 9 Modern Tiger subspecies but since these 3 tiger subspecies have gone, now the world has only 6 Tiger subspecies:
